Ready for your close up?

Cooking and television have a long association, with viewers enjoying the opportunity to see techniques and dishes demonstrated with flair. TV chefs are welcome culinary guides, whose familiarity encourages us when we approach their cookbooks. Little wonder that when it comes to recipes, those by TV chefs are often among our favorites.

Ever popular on ckbk, restaurateur Nisha Katona is a regular on our screens, and here on ckbk we bring her to your screen, with embedded videos of some of her best-loved dishes. On her latest TV show Nisha Katona’s Home Kitchen she draws recipes from all her books, recipes combining clear straightforward preparation with bold flavors influenced by her Indian heritage. Why not try her celebrated Mother Butter Chicken, or veggie treat Street Hawker Sweetcorn.

Founder of The School of Wok, Jeremy Pang’s TV series take guests and viewers on a journey into Asian food—such as his ITV show Jeremy Pang’s Hong Kong Kitchen which explores his own Chinese heritage. His book Hong Kong Diner is full of tempting Hong Kong inspired dishes. As Jeremy puts it: ‘This is the food I love to cook because this is the food I love to eat.’ Watch Jeremy cook a number of these dishes with videos on ckbk including  Hong Kong Char Siu, and these Market Style Cheung Fun.

Familiar from the big and small screen, revered actor Vincent Price became almost as well-known as a gourmet cook as for his many acting roles. His 1971 British television show was accompanied by a cookbook Cooking Price-Wise: The Original Foodie, which is now a cult classic, and newly live on ckbk.
‘Cooking Price-Wise, as it all turns out, was far more than a cookbook or cookery show. It is a way of life. Cooking Price-Wise means seeing the world as your oyster, and then learning how to enjoy it by sharing it with others.(..)His interest in cooking came first and foremost from his love of food—shopping for it, preparing it, eating it, but mostly savoring it with others in gratitude and celebration.’ Victoria Price

As Vincent’s daughter Victoria makes clear in the updated 2017 edition of the book, her father’s recipes stem from a real love of food, and life. The recipes are warm-hearted, and made for sharing—such as Beef Stroganoff with Pimento Rice or this Farmhouse Chicken Casserole.

If you want more TV chefs, we have a whole bookshelf full of small-screen superstars for you.

Happy Mother's Day to the mother figures in our lives

Sunday March 30 is a chance to pay tribute to all those who mother us. Why not show a bit of gratitude to the ones who pick us up when we are down, the ones who do the little things, and maybe deserve a bit of care in return.

Cooking something homemade is a precious way to show some love.

There are a whole host of recipes in this collection for a Mother’s Day Lunch: Simple Yet Special Ideas for a Meal at Home.

Serve Eastern Aubergines, or Tessa Kiros' Moussaka

Even better than a bunch of flowers try Beautiful Baking with Flowers. Bake a batch of Lavender Lover’s Shortbread, or wow them with a Vanilla & White Chocolate Naked Cake with Blueberry Buttercream.

Ingredient focus: wild garlic

Wild garlic (ramsons) is not in fact part of the true garlic plant, but is a different plant that covers the ground with vibrant green leaves, tiny white star-like flowers, and scents the air with a garlicky aroma. In season from late February to May, the best time to pick these abundant leaves is before the flowers come in. Later in the season the leaves become intensely strong in flavor, even pungent.

Wild garlic pesto is easy to make, and a nice change from regular pesto, but make sure you use a little of the wild garlic along with other leaves, such as basil or even spinach, to ensure the sauce isn’t overwhelming—such as in this recipe for Smoked Aubergine Gnocchi with Wild Garlic, Mint & Basil Pesto.
Wild garlic works well in many savory recipes, so to make the most of it while it is in season explore our collection of 12 Ways with Wild Garlic. Find Wild Garlic & Cheddar Spelt Scones, this Wild Garlic & English Blue Cheese Tart, and more.

March 28 is the wonderfully named Something on a Stick Day, which is an excuse for some creative—and handheld—foodie treats if ever we heard one.
