Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil in the bottom of a large saucepan. Put the yams in a steamer and cover the pot. Cook over moderate heat for 30 minutes, or until a fork can pierce the yams easily.
Remove the yams from the steamer and allow to cool while you make the glaze.
