Philosophers, artists and poets have all fallen foul of its infamous charms, with its psychotic and hallucinogenic properties being legendary.* Although the ingredients do include several psychedelic substances, historical tales of crazed behaviour were probably a result of the extremely high alcohol content in early distilled versions of the drink.
