You come out the tube station, head up Stroud Green Road past the Nando’s and you’re thinking “it can’t be this far.” Over the second set of crossroads and hope diminishes further. Then, can it be? Is that it? The sign slowly emerges like a gorilla from the mist: “HOT SANDWICHES AND BOOZE”.

If you’re lucky it’s raining, so our hand-me-down Spice Zone awning will be out, billowing in the breeze, doing its brand-building work.

You head inside and an incredibly handsome, overweight man in a black polo shirt starts waving like an idiot and asking if you’re “getting a takeaway or sitting down?” You wonder what the hell is going on, take a seat and are brought ginger water and some menus.
