A group of Bondo women and girls wait at a market in the chill of early morning. The Bondo are one of many distinct cultural groups that live at a subsistence level in the densely jungled hills of southern, Orissa.

I wanted to plan a visit to Orissa, a state on the east coast of India, so one night at home I started searching the Internet. I was specifically interested in the tribal mountainous regions of Orissa, and sure enough, there on the Internet I found several different small tourist agencies willing to arrange for a car and driver. One seemed especially good because it was the only one actually located in Orissa, and the language was matter-of-fact, not overblown with adventure.
