Fish is pareve and so may be eaten with either meat or dairy foods. This provides great variety and flexibility within the otherwise demanding laws of Kashrut. Having fish as a main course means that you can serve an elegant entertaining menu that has butter, cheeses and rich dairy desserts, without worrying about the lack of meat. Both Ashkenazim and Sephardim have many traditional fish dishes, from the fried fish of London’s East End to whole fish baked with fragrant spices in Israel.
