There have always been hens at Gloagburn, ever since Ian’s grandfather John built a henhouse in a bothy by the farmhouse. However the idea for the farm shop really began when we bought some hens for Fergus, our eldest son. Soon he was taking trays of eggs in for his teachers at primary school, and manning a stall at Perth farmers’ market. Now Fergus’s kids are continuing the tradition and have their own flock to look after. Our free-range eggs are still sold throughout the local area, and they play a starring role in a whole host of dishes at the café, from brunches through to tarts.
