Sweets are not made every day on the islands, only on special occasions. Fresh fruits are the usual conclusion to lunch or dinner, with desserts served on Easter, Christmas and at family feasts. In Greece, only children celebrate their birthdays, while grown-ups feast on the day that the saint whose name they have been given is celebrated by the Church. On that occasion, a sweet is offered to the guests who visit the family to wish many happy returns to Constantine on May 21, to Maria on August 15, to Yannis (John) on January 7 and so on.
