THE RIDE
L’Étape du Tour – 180km. This is an amateur cycling event on a Tour de France stage.
PRE-RIDE

At 5am I had oats prepared the night before (oats, milk, banana, honey and a sachet of vanilla protein powder) in a McDonald’s cup (I forgot a container!). Immediately before setting off at 6.30am I had a banana.

DURING
  • Three mini brioches with ham, avocado and cheese wrapped in tin foil, not plastic.
  • Four Clif bars (mixed flavours, but oatmeal raisin or coconut chocolate chip FTW).
  • Two pre-packaged chocolate crêpes (melted to perfection by the first climb).
  • Two caffeine gels (just before the BIG climbs).
  • Half a banana and an emergency cup of Coke (last feed-stop!).
  • Ten bidons of water (five with electrolyte tabs) – the temperature on the ride peaked at 35 degrees!
