I don’t think there’s any comparison between homemade and shop-bought mince pies. The mincemeat can be made months ahead and looks most satisfying as it matures on the larder shelf, while the rich pastry is even more melting if you can make it in advance and keep it in your freezer. However, some people, especially children, don’t really like Christmas pudding, or even mince pies, so it is good to have something sweet and refreshing but still seasonal as an alternative.
