Gutedel, meaning ‘good and noble’ in German, is not the most obvious synonym for chasselas but is still used in Germany, particularly in the Markgräflerland, southern Baden, which along with neighbouring areas of Alsace and Switzerland, is sometimes referred to as the Gutedel Triangle on account of this variety’s ubiquity and continued popularity. The wines, generally juicy and straightforward, may have notes of almond and hay in the better examples, and particularly old vines in calcareous sites can evince both distinction and minerality. A dark-berried form, Roter Gutedel is also known in Baden.
