Romania’s second most planted red wine vine variety, after Merlot, whose name, meaning ‘grandmother’s grape’, compares directly with fetească or ‘young girl’s grape’. It has long been grown in the east of the country but total plantings had fallen to 4,516 ha/11,159 acres by 2008, typically producing light, fruity reds that are considerably less ‘serious’ than Feteascǎ Neagrǎ.
