The tradition of Festa Junina (June Festivals) celebrates three of the most well-loved Catholic saints in Brazil: Saint John, Saint Peter and Saint Antony. In the north-east it is also a celebration of the arrival of winter and the start of the much-needed rainy season. The corn harvest is under way, so corn features in most of the traditional treats found at June parties: pamonha (corn pudding steamed in corn husks), maize couscous, curau (corn custard), cooked or grilled corn, maize cakes and popcorn.
