Islam is a religion that permeates a Muslim’s life; and food, recognized as one of God’s great gifts, is naturally regulated according to Islamic law. The dietary laws of Islam are based upon the Koran, the holy book of Islam, and the Hadith, the collection of the sayings of the prophet Muhammad. Muslims in America, like Muslims everywhere, are expected to follow these dietary laws. And in a predominantly non-Muslim culture, this can lead to certain problems for Muslims, as well as new opportunities.
