The Klondike Bar, a square block of vanilla ice cream encased in a chocolate coating, was created around 1922 by the Isaly family, who owned the Mansfield Pure Milk Company in Mansfield, Ohio. The product was probably named after the Klondike River in the Yukon, made famous by a gold rush in the 1890s. The bars were made by hand at the family’s store outside Youngstown, Ohio; at first they were made on a stick, and were offered in several different flavors. Klondike Bars were later produced by the Isaly Dairy Company of Pittsburgh, founded in 1931.
