Shaved almonds or coarse-ground nuts such as hazelnuts are easy to apply to the outside of a filled and frosted cake. Toast the nuts first for more flavor. Save pieces of stale cake, process them in a food processor, and save in the freezer to use for decorating the sides of cakes.
