What basis there is for the story that Cumberland sauce was named after Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, that brother of George IV’s who became the last independent ruler of Hanover, nobody has ever explained. Still, as legends concerning the origin of dishes go, it’s as good as another and better than some: the sauce itself being as obviously German in origin as was its supposed royal namesake of the House of Hanover.
