A classic Brazilian dessert, quindim is a cross between a cake and a coconut-laced baked custard. The whole coconuts you buy in supermarkets or fruit stores can sometimes be rather old and dried out. Taste the coconut before you make the recipe: if it seems drab, replace half of the milk with canned coconut milk, which is easy to find in specialty stores or ordinary grocery stores.
I have a special affection for quindim because it was one of the desserts we made at the Sporting Club
