Of all Italian cities, Venice was more strategically located on the spice trading routes during the Middle Ages. In the 1200’s, the city was the hub of western exports— herbs, spices and foods from the rest of Italy and several European countries. At the same time, it was the primary import center for herbs and spices from exotic eastern places like North Africa, China and India. With the wealth of fragrances mingling in the air, the cuisine of Venice and the surrounding Veneto region becam
